On Wednesday, it was reported that Shannon Marie Duval, also known as Shannon Germanton, told police that she left her two little boys on the side of Northern Idaho's I-90 highway because she got amnesia. But the story of the I-90 missing mom didn't match that of stories told to police by her children and others questioned.
The boys, ages 3 and 6, told deputies that their mother walked them to a spot on the road in the dark and rain before telling them that she had run out of gas and needed to go for help.
This was after she was seen in Wal-Mart at 8 p.m. on Monday night acting strangely, prompting a shopper of the supercenter to call police according to NWCN. Medical personnel found the boy's mother in a bathroom, along with a gas can, when they arrived to investigate, telling police later that she checked out medically so they let her go with the children.
Big mistake.
The I-90 missing mom had told the medical personnel that assistance was on its way from Spokane, and they believed all was well. With no obvious signs of distress or intoxication they really couldn't do much more than let her go, except to tell police that they might want to keep an eye on her.
After leaving the family-friendly shopping center she proceeded to ditch the kids near the I-90 interchange construction project site, at Mile Post 1, before hitching a ride the next morning between 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. with an employee from Jacklin Seed. The employee dropped her off that Tuesday morning at Pleasant View Road's Exxon Station, stating that she told them that she had argued with her boyfriend and just needed to get to a phone to secure a ride.
By 9 a.m., her two sons had been found by a construction supervisor, and he reported them to authorities, who took the children into protective custody, where they are expected to remain since no one has come forward to claim them and police have arrested their mother.
A tip was phoned in to law enforcement after the children made the news Tuesday evening. Cops say an anonymous caller told them that they could find the missing mom at the 300 block of South David in Washington, and the Spokane County, Wash. Sheriff's Office did around 8:30 p.m. that night. Germanton was arrested for an outstanding traffic warrant from Washington for negligent driving (it wasn't her first), and she was booked into the Spokane County Jail right afterward.
Duval had her first court hearing on Halloween, where she was officially charged with two counts of felony injury to a child, which could net her as much as 30 years prison time if she is given the maximum 15 years per charge.
The missing mom claims she had amnesia, resulting in her leaving the children behind. It appears, however, it must be selective amnesia since she doesn't exhibit the earmarks of a more pronounced type. In another strange case involving a mother and two children, police are trying to find Connor and Brandon Moore after their mother Glenda reported that they were ripped from her arms on a Staten Island road overcome with waves during the monster storm Sandy.
