Rhode Island Powerball Winner Claims $2,000,000
There was only one second-tier winner from the last Powerball drawing, and it was from the smallest state in the nation. The Wakefield, Rhode Island Powerball winner purchased his quick pick ticket at Commons Convenience Store, located at 49 South County Commons Way, in South Kingstown for the January 2 drawing. He wasted no time in claiming his prize either. He won the prize Wednesday night, and by Thursday, January 3, he had the money in his hand!
According to Rhode Island Lottery officials, the winner started to scream when he checked the Powerball numbers in the morning paper, and saw he matched five out of six Powerball winning numbers, but not the red Powerball number. His wife thought something had happened! She was in tears when they accepted the check at the lottery headquarters.
The standard amount is $1,000,000 for a second place prize. However, the Rhode Island Powerball winner spent an extra dollar on the Power Play option, hoping that his wager would double his prize. He was right! In fact, he says he doesn't always buy Power Play tickets, but he's glad he did this time. You can also bet he'll most likely be buying Power Play tickets from now on too!
