A pregnant 16-year-old girl in Texas, who is identified only by the initials R.E.K., is suing her parents to stop them from forcing her to have an abortion. In the lawsuit, R.E.K. claims that "her parents are coercing her to abort her 9-week-old fetus through both verbal and physical threats and harassment," according to Fox News.
Specific allegations in the lawsuit claim that the teen's father said he was going to take her to get an abortion and that he has harassed the father of the fetus and his parents. The lawsuit also accuses the girl's mother of suggesting she might slip her daughter the abortion pill.
Many are surprised by the idea that parents would be so determined for their daughter to have an abortion against her will. Although R.E.K. is still a minor, whose parents are allowed to make certain decisions for her, there is something savage and barbaric about forcing a woman, even one not fully grown, to end the life of her unborn child.
Texas Center for Defense of Life attorney Stephen Casey, who is representing R.E.K. in the case, says that she is protected under the law. "They cannot drag her to get an abortion, force an abortion on our client."
Following the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Roe v. Wade that a woman has the right to decide whether she wants an abortion, another case, Bellotti v. Baird, established that "a teenager has the right to make her own decisions concerning her reproductive health".
As reported by Click 2 Houston, "a judge granted a temporary restraining order to save the baby's life".
Another hearing is due to be held on Friday.
Who knows if the relationship between R.E.K. and her parents can ever be repaired? Regardless of who wins in this case, it will certainly have a lasting impact on all those involved.
