Adult Themed Homework Question Assigned to Fourth Graders

An adult themed homework question was assigned to fourth graders at the Playa Del Rey Elementary School in Gilbert, Arizona. Who would assign a question about adultery to small children?

Age inappropriate: Kyera had to go to her mother for help with the question, answering that the man in the situation outlined by the assignment had cheated and was in big trouble with his wife

The assignment was regarding how one should handle certain situations. One of the questions was about a wife finding "another woman's hair clip under her bed, with hair in it that didn't belong to her," as reported by abc15. "I was a little shocked to see it on my homework," said 4th grader Kyera McCloskey. She asked her mom to help her with the question. Her mom said, "I don't care what age, it's not something that the school should bring up to my daughter." Although the teacher apologized after getting a call from one annoyed mother, it is unfathomable that the adult themed homework question was ever written for children in the first place.

Seriously?? Nine year old kids are supposed to answer this? This is disgusting. Pervert on the staff. Stick to questions about finding $10 on the sidewalk...

Pervert on the staff heehee - that struck me funny - Thank you Jan, I know this is not a funny issue - exactly why I thought I should post about it. Nine year old kids are supposed to answer this? My thought exactly.

I'd like to know what the outcome of this was. How was this explained as appropriate for 4th graders and who wrote the question and approved it? I'm also curious about the kids' answers. I'd expect them to write something like "Return it to the lady it belongs to." I think they're probably old enough to wonder how someone's hair clip gets under another person's bed, but not quite ready for the answer.

That would be funny because I'd have to bring the Prince and there might be problems. He has a hard enough time handling some of my ideas.

I was thinking of that. Of course, we'd give him "run" of the place, and he'd always be welcomed...but he might just try to come in and change the place around. ;]

That teacher is off the wall. I agree with Jan S. When my 30 year old was 9 he bought a book from scholastic book service about a boy who decided to skip riding the bus and got in an abandoned tire and rolled home. I had to advise my son to stay away from abandoned tires because snakes tend to like to crawl in, and the dangers of doing something like that. What idiot decided this was a good story for school kids to read? So yea, as parents one has to keep an eye on what goes on. Now it may not seem like a big thing to someone else but we lived in a rural area with no sidewalks... and I didn't have a car to go rescue him... he needed to take the bus.... it was also too long of a walk or he wouldn't have qualified for the bus.

Thank you Heather ;-) I agree entirely that parents need to be engaged. We would not have even heard about this story if it were not for one parent who was justifiably outraged.

I think I was lucky with my daughters schooling. If anything her teachers worried too much. never had any of these kinds of problems

Besides the obvious, reading the links and finding the teacher saying she hadn't read the assignment before handing it out gave me pause as well. If true, that's another question that should be asked...
