Pregnant correctional officer Tyshinia Love Brewster of Poughkeepsie allegedly had sex with a male inmate at a maximum-security state prison in the Hudson Valley, where she has been employed for over seven years, reports Fox News. It has also been reported that the inmate is the father of Brewster's unborn child.
Brewster, who is said to be in her sixth month of pregnancy, was arrested at her home Wednesday and charged with felony third-degree rape and official misconduct. The rape charge is due to the fact that "an inmate cannot legally consent to sex," according to the Huffington Post.
While it's not that uncommon to hear about male guards having sexual relationships with female prisoners, this scenario seems to be quite unusual. It will be interesting to find out if the pregnancy was planned.
According to officers, the 39-year-old Brewster would meet the inmate on his cell block, during her shift assignment.
The inmate has since been transferred from the Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill to another prison.
"Brewster is free on her own recognizance".
Some would disagree with the rape charge in this case. However, it does make sense, considering the fact that Brewster's job meant that she had authority over the inmate, which could have been used to coerce him into a relationship.
