Rapper Chief Keef's name has come up in the horrifying case involving the senseless thrill killing of an Australian baseball player.
Oklahoma teenagers Chancey Luna, Michael Jones and James Edwards have been accused of shooting Chris Lane in the back while he was out jogging. Edwards and Luna have been accused of first degree murder, while alleged driver Jones has been accused of being an accessory to the crime.
Jones reportedly told police that he and his friends decided to kill somebody simply because they were "bored." However, a recent report by the Daily Mail suggests that the suspects were influenced by a controversial rapper who is known for his violent lyrics and criminal past. Suspect James Edwards tweeted this line from the Chief Keef song "I Don't Like It" just two days before the murder of Chris Lane:
"With my n****s when it's time to start taken life's' (sic)."
So it sounds like the teen suspects were just wannabe thugs who fell in love with the gangsta life that some rappers glamorize, and it's been suggested that they actually killed Lane because they were trying to join the notorious Crips gang. Even if this is the case, Keef better get ready for a big media backlash now that his name has been dragged into this awful story -- remember how Marilyn Manson was blamed for the Columbine shootings?
The murder of Lane will likely keep the gun debate going since it's shocking to think that teens are procuring firearms and randomly killing people, but the subject of race is also coming up in the case. Suspect James Edwards tweeted about knocking out white people shortly after the George Zimmerman trial verdict, so many conservative talking heads are convinced that race played a part in the killing. They've complained that the case isn't getting as much attention as the killing of Trayvon Martin, but there might be a very reasonable explanation for this.
Unlike Zimmerman, the suspects in the Lane case were actually arrested right away. And once race became a factor in the Trayvon Martin case, George Zimmerman got sympathy and support. Some argued that Zimmerman just thought that he was fighting crime when he went after Trayvon, but no one is trying to come up with excuses for the three teens accused of murdering Lane.
So if conservative talking heads like Rush Limbaugh are looking for a race fight here, they just aren't going to find one. Who in their right mind would defend a coldblooded killer just because of their race?
So do you think that race or rappers had anything to do with the murder of Lane? Or is it something else that makes kids like the three suspects in this case and the Columbine shooters so capable and willing to kill?
