Hacktivist group Anonymous has a new target. Â Daisy Coleman, 14, and her 13-year-old friend have become victims of the clearly existing rape culture in Maryville, Missouri. Â In the wee hours of January 8, 2012, the girls snuck out of Daisy home and met up with boys from the town's football team. Â Apparent ringleader Matthew Barnett took the girls back to his house, where he admits to having sex with Daisy. Â He claims it was consensual, the physical evidence, as well as the recollections of Daisy's friend, say otherwise.
This is not a new thing. Rapes in small towns being dismissed as "boys will be boys" situations have gone on forever. Â In this case, the primary perpetrator is the grandson of a former state political official, which led to his charges, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, to be dropped. Also dropped were the charges of sexual exploitation of a minor for Jordan Zech, who filmed the encounter between Daisy and Matthew on a friends' iPhone. Â The video was deleted, but technology being what it is, it's pretty likely that it can be reacquired.
Much like they did in the Steubenville rape case, hacktivist group Anonymous has warned the people of Maryville to beware. Â They demand justice for the girls, whose lives have been forever changed by the thoughtlessness of their peers. Â
A peaceful protest will be held on October 22 at 10 am, at the Nodaway County Courthouse in Maryville, Missouri, with hopes of having the case reopened and justice served for Daisy. Â
